Is the death of PC gaming an unintended consequence of Microsoft's Vista debacle? PC games are in sharp decline as game publishers are pushing more traditionally PC-only genres (strategy, rts, mmorpg) to consoles. I was discussing this with a friend yesterday. The thesis was: Microsoft was making a big push for PC games...and then the bottom fell out as Vista pissed off everybody and the Vista adoption rate fell.
If you asked me two or three years ago, I would've said video game consoles aren't going to exist in the next generation except as a type of TV/entertainment set-top box (basically an entertainment oriented harddrive connected to your plasma/lcd screen). Content (video games, movies, music, etc) would be pulled from a broadband connection. You would never buy a physical video game box or DVD box again.
Now, I'm not so sure. Broadband adoption in the US is still lagging, and consoles will get yet another boost if mmorpgs leave PCs. I don't know. It's interesting.
are PC games doomed? Is it Vista's fault?
