Yahoo is offering a hosting deal that offers unlimited bandwidth and storage for $11.95/month. Being a skeptic, I called them. They maintain it's true, although I find it slightly difficult to believe that's the case in all practicality. I mean, let's say Wikipedia wants to use their service. Twelve bucks a month isn't gonna cut it.

I forgot to ask them if it was a shared or dedicated server. I assume it's shared. More reason to be skeptical of the infinite pool of bandwidth Yahoo is purportedly mining. (Practically speaking, I realize that what they're saying is, "your site is not big enough that you will ever run out of bandwidth in a month, so whether we say you have 1TB of bandwidth, 100tb of bandwidth or unlimited, what does it matter?)

Up to 20 addon domains. 1,000 emails. Nearly unlimited email space.

This actually seemed like a good deal.

Then I asked what version of PHP and MySQL they were running. 4.3.x and 4.1, respectively. Support for PHP 4 ended in January (the last 4.x release was 4.4.8). Current version is 5.2.6. Active support for mySQL 4 ended in 2006 (extended support runs until 2009). MySQL 5.0 is the current version.

So basically, if you're running anything on your site that uses PHP, you shouldn't use Yahoo Hosting. Moreover, many applications that still run on PHP 4/5 are switching to PHP 5 only.

The guy I spoke with at Yahoo said he would call me when they update their hosts. I...I wonder if he really will.
