Recently it was brought to my attention, that my passion and enjoyment for my favorite band was a little Gay. It was also brought to my attention that although it was "GAY" it didn't mean I was a homosexual, it just presented an uncoolness.

I of course became defensive. Oasis is my favorite band and they have been for over ten years. For me to change my thinking just because someone thinks its Gay is crazy. So my question is has anyone out there been alienated because of the music they listen to or the band they like? And does liking Oasis make me in fact Gay?

Get a grip, Cris. If every offhand comment I make where "gay" merely connotes "not cool" gets picked apart on a public forum then I guess I'd better not talk at all. You're being way too sensitive.
To be clear...I think being fanatic about any band is not that cool.
Also, I have a gay best friend who is personally offended by the rampant use of "that is SO GAY" but being the crass asshole that I am, I continue to say it. It doesn't mean I am anti-gay. I am half a gay myself.

I hope you get all your cronies to back you up on your Oasis issues. And they are ISSUES.

Apparently I should be getting a grip of a cock. And who says I'm a fanatic. I just like what I like. That's all. Why is it that I'm a fanatic. Are my walls draped with Oasis memorbilia? Nooo. Do I have a concert worn t-shirt taken off and thrown to me from Noel Gallagher? Nooo. Do I dream about being a member of the band? Nooo. I just enjoy their music. What's so GAAAYYY about that?

I'm a gay and I sort of like Oasis. Does that matter?
I agree with Heide's friend about the rampant use of the word gay to mean something negative though. It is funny sometimes to use and I do it myself occasionally, but it's backwards.
But I was going to Tashi Station to pick up some power converters.

I agree and I'm sorry you had to be exposed to something like that. It's an insensitve world we live in where the word Gay is used as something bad.

Ya know...[sigh]. I really hate offending people. I guess I feel like, because I am so gay friendly it should be ok to throw the word around. I realize that I don't know what it's like to go through life having to defend your lifestyle on a regular basis. On the other hand, I know what it's like to have an immigrant parent who is ultra-senstive to the Nazi stereotype. I just don't get offended by anything anymore. I guess I shouldn't apply my own standards to everyone else. My gay best friend and I have been friends for 23 years, and the fact that he is offended by things I say when he knows very well I love him unconditionally says a lot. I just want everyone to stop whining about their sore vaginas.

Well thats just it. Like Grunter here gets offended. How can anyone know what will and will not offend someone. Sure there are extreme examples and you know not to go there. But when is that borderline comment too much? It is a little strange to go walking around on your tip toes all the time, but yeah the "Hey Cris are you in the mafia" comments do get annoying. And the Cris Italia, "hey you must be italian" lines get old and tired real quick. Thing is are you supposed to just stop getting offended, when you know the person is just being a dick? Or do you have the right to be pissed off?

Cris,

You'd be gay if you told me you liked Elton John for the past 20 years.

Oasis is a great band, although when I need my Euro fix, I prefer Radiohead.

Good job throwing in the "for the past 20 years" part. There was a time when Elton John didn't suck. I wasn't born then, but my elders have regaled me with tales of his past glory. Like "Rocketman" and stuff.

Thanks for the support fellas. I was starting to feel like an outcast I even threw out a bunch of my Oasis mixed CDs because I thought I needed to let go. Now I can make new CDs however. I feel vilified. Thanks again!

I never said I was offended, not on here anyway. It's just a word that I am going to try to use less frequently and point out that it might offend some people (rightfully so).

Why would it be more gay to like Elton John? Because he is gay?
Most songwriters, even the best have only a few years where he or she is going to be producing top-notch material. After that stroke of genius passes, most songwriters write new songs that sound a lot like their old songs or just play the same hits over and over and over again. I was not an Elton John fan until I saw him in concert with only a piano (no back-up band) about 10 years ago. He was one of the best performers I have ever seen. That is not easy to pull off when you don't have anyone backing you up. He didn't have a light-show or explosions or anything. Well he did have a video screen showing scenes from the Lion King when he sang those songs and that was sort of gay (OOPS!)
But I was going to Tashi Station to pick up some power converters.

My brother used to be obsessed with Oasis and he isn't a gay. Recently he's transferred the love to Led Zep, for some odd reason. Don't worry about it. I'll stand up for anyone's right to be a gay without persecution. If you were, you should be proud. And since it sounds like you aren't, who cares what someone calls you? The word doesn't have to be bad. It's bad when we intend it or understan it as an insult.

It must be an age thing. I'm 29 and don't remember the pre-sucking Elton John.
