How to play the following games in the forum:

Chess (plus Arimaa and other chess variants)

War of Words (plus Scrabble variants)

The Captain's Mistress (aka Connect Four, Four in a Row, Connect 4)

Go (plus Gomuku, Pente and other variants)

Checkers (aka English Draughts and other variants)

Reversi (aka Othello)

Or check out the codes for the starting positions of each game.

Basically, you use the 'pic' tag to display pictures of individual playing pieces.
[pic]light[/pic][pic]knight-dd[/pic][pic]light[/pic]
[pic]dark[/pic][pic]light[/pic][pic]rook-ld[/pic]
The above code displays:

Posted ImagePosted Imagehttp://www.misfitopi...mes/rook-ld.png
Each game uses different picture codes to display the board and pieces.

There's a forum mod floating around for phpbb and other forum software that handles chess using a javascript thingy.
It's not bad, but the method here allows the players to physically move the pieces any way they want, handicap
themselves by removing a piece, play any sort of variant they want, etc. More importantly, in my opinion, this method allows you to visually track the movement of the pieces by scanning the thread. In the javascript mod, on the other hand, you only see the current move and a list of chess notations.

Enjoy.

The pic codes follow an x-yz format.
x denotes the piece type (pawn, rook, knight, bishop, queen, king).
y denotes the color of the piece (l for light, d for dark)
z denotes the color of the square the piece is on (l for light, d for dakr)

For example,
rook-dl = rook, dark player, light square

The other pics are:
light = light square
dark = dark square
chesstop = top row of notation
chess8l = notation 8, left border
chess8r = notation 8, right border
chess7l = notation 7, left border, and so on, etc.
chessbottom = bottom row of notation

Chess board with notation is here.

War of Words - similar to Scrabble and Literati and those types
of games but with a significant twist: YOU pick the letters your opponent
will use. It is also smaller in scope and plays on an 8x8 board.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Imagehttp://www.misfitopi...ames/w-dark.png
http://www.misfitopi...mes/w-light.png
http://www.misfitopi...ames/w-dark.png

http://www.misfitopi...mes/w-light.png
http://www.misfitopi...ames/w-dark.png
http://www.misfitopi...mes/w-light.png

Players begin by alternately giving the opponent one letter from the following
letter pool. They continue until each player has 7 letters in his/her hand. At least two must be vowels.

Letter pool
E 4
A 3
I 3
N 2
O 2
R 2
T 2
1 of everything else
1 of the following: J, V, W, or X.
1 of the following: K, Q, Y or Z.

Also written:
Letter pool (underlined letters have already been used)
A3 B C D E4 F G H I3 L M N2 O2 P R2 S T2 U JVWX KQYZ

1 point for each letter used.
+5 bonus for using all seven letters in hand.
+3 bonus for finishing first (getting rid of all letters in hand when there are
no more letters to draw from the pool).
-1 penalty for passing a turn.

Player starts by placing letters to form a word. This word may be placed anywhere
on the board. Typically, the person who takes the trouble to organize the game
(getting his/her opponent(s) together) should get the first crack. If a group plays
regularly, the start should rotate amongst the players.

As with crossword puzzles, Scrabble, Literati, words must be linked by connecting
to previous words.

At the end of your turn, give your opponent a number of letters equal to the number
he/she used in the previous turn, e.g., if he played "CAT" in the turn prior to yours,
give him three new letters. If there are more than two players, you give letters to the
opponent who played on the turn immediately prior to yours. If available, at least one
vowel must be given.

Play until (1) one player has used up every letter in his/her hand AND there are no
more letters to draw from the pool, or (2) all players have passed on consecutive turns,
e.g. if there are three players, game ends immediately if Player A passed, then Player B
passes and then Player C passes.

The code is simple. Use this code.
[pic]w-e[/pic]
Every piece starts with a 'w-'
If you want an E, use w-e. If you want a J, use w-j. If you want a light square, w-light. Dark square is w-dark.

I made double letter, triple letter, double word, triple word and blank pieces in case you want
to run your own variant that's closer to a Scrabble type game. You can either make up the
values of each letter or use the standard Scrabble ones (which you can find on the Internet).
Keep score as you go.
http://www.misfitopi...s/w-2letter.png = w-2letter
http://www.misfitopi...s/w-3letter.png = w-3letter
http://www.misfitopi...mes/w-2word.png = w-2word
http://www.misfitopi...mes/w-3word.png = w-3word
http://www.misfitopi...mes/w-blank.png = w-blank

The official Scrabble letter distribution is as follows:
* 2 blank tiles (scoring 0 points)
* 1 point: E ×12 , A ×9, I ×9, O ×8, N ×6, R ×6, T ×6, L ×4, S ×4, U ×4
* 2 points: D ×4, G ×3
* 3 points: B ×2, C ×2, M ×2, P ×2
* 4 points: F ×2, H ×2, V ×2, W ×2, Y ×2
* 5 points: K ×1
* 8 points: J ×1, X ×1
* 10 points: Q ×1, Z ×1

The code for the War of Words starting board is here.

You may find a playing board notation to be useful. Top row is A through H. Sides run from 8 on top to 1 on bottom.
You can see how this appears in the Chess game.
Those pics are:
chesstop = top row of notation
chess8l = notation 8, left border
chess8r = notation 8, right border

Go and its variants such as Gomoku and Pente. The forum supports a full 19x19 board
with notation (1-19, a-t, the letter 'i' is omitted as per custom).
A more reasonable 9x9 board is explained below.

http://www.misfitopi.../games/gcor.png

All pic codes begin with 'g' for Go.

g0 = empty
gl = light piece
gd = dark piece
gm = empty space with dot marker
gupl = upper left corner
gleft = left side
gbotl = bottom left corner
gupr = upper right corner
gright = right side
gbotr = bottom right corner

The notation pieces:
g01 = numbered notation for number '1'
g02 = etc.
gza = alphabetical notation for letter 'a'
gzb = etc.
gcor = upper left, upper right, bottom left and bottom right corners

The starting notated 9x9 board is here.

It is played on an 8x8 board.

The pic codes are simple. The pix are in xy format. x is the color of the piece. y is the color of the square.
ld = light piece on a dark square
dd = dark piece on a dark square
ldk = light piece, dark square, kinged
ddk = dark piece, dark square, kinged
light = empty light square
dark = empty dark square

The following pieces are not needed, but you can use them for your own variants:
ll = ld = light piece on a light square
dl = dark piece on a light square
llk = light piece, light square, kinged
dlk = dark piece, light square, kinged

The starting position is here.:

You may find a playing board notation to be useful. Top row is A through H. Sides run from 8 on top to 1 on bottom.

Reversi is often better known as Othello. Players try to surround the other's pieces which converts them
to their own color. It is played on an 8x8 board.
