I have a two-part question for you, but first some background.
When my wife and I go to bed, our cat, Arianna, jumps into bed with us. We've discovered that if we open our mouths wide (as if we're yawning), she'll stick her face inside and sniff. She'll only sniff once. If we try to get her to sniff our mouths a second time, later on, she won't do it.
1. Why does she sniff our mouths?
2. Why are we letting her sniff our mouths?

That might be the greatest question ever

I think this might be the first time in the Ask McA history that actually law was cited and used to answer a legal question. Nice!

The courts have determined that, in the case of DVDs, circumventing copyright protection to make a backup copy is illegal. I even have a link to an article with a link to the court decision, but it's on the crashed hard drive, so I don't have access to it right now. Essentially, if you have to do anything to get around any protections that are on the DVD to keep it from being copied, then it's illegal to make a copy, even for backup purposes. If you don't have to circumvent anything, then it's legal to make the backup copy. It's important to note that DVDs are being treated differently from software programs, music CDs and other copyrighted items.
Aha, I've found what I was looking for:
From US Code : Title 17, Section 1201
Quote
(a) Violations Regarding Circumvention of Technological Measures.
(1)
(A) No person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title. The prohibition contained in the preceding sentence shall take effect at the end of the 2-year period beginning on the date of the enactment of this chapter.

The above is also confirmed by the US Copyright Office.
