But sometimes they nail it... Sin City was damn near perfect.
Most of the time it's pretty good, and occasionally you get Spiderman 3 or worse yet Batman & Robin. The way I see it FF:RotSS can't be worse than the original, and I'm hoping that it's actually a little better.

I liked the first one a lot. Yeah, yeah, it's not totally faithful to the comics -- but they did an excellent job of nailing the dynamic between the four main characters (especially between Johnny and Ben). That was more important to me than Dr. Doom, who they totally cocked up. Generally, though, its heart was in the right place and the energy was high.
This new one also gets the character relationships right. Sue/Reed, Johnny/Ben, Sue/Johnny. Perfect. It's a joy to just watch them interact. The Silver Surfer looked and sounded great. All but one of the action sequences were fun to watch. Nice power usage, in general -- especially where Sue is concerned. All of the actors seem to be having a good time -- unlike the leads in Spidey 3, who looked like they were being given a continuous enema.
Unfortunately, as with the first movie, the bad stuff really stands out. The biggest offender is Julian McMahon, who minces about to an irritating degree. I really hate him. And the chick who plays Alicia Masters...jeez...worst "blind" performance I've ever seen. Also, a fairly important action scene takes place almost completely in the dark -- I couldn't tell what the hell was going on.
Generally, though, the good outweighs the bad. It's not a rollercoaster ride, but it's not a disappointment, either, not by a long shot.
So...not crap.

Now, I always set my mindset on "movie adaptations expectations" mode when I go to these movies...it was on hiatus since X3 and Spidey 3 and GhostRider (which I found rather entertaining)
I saw it the second night...and I really liked the first one like the other people who clapped at the end in the theater. I absolutely LOVE this new one.
The new installment was INCREDIBLY close to the comic in many way. The only thing fanboys will hate is the portrayal of Galactus. This movie went by in a quick, non dragging pace and the action was awesome! DOOM returns and actually IS the Doom we remember from the comics (as Doom IS the original template for Darth Vader). FINALLY Doom was the badass I wanted to see in Doom AND he had the FULL Dr.Doom Armor! The outfit looked much better than the Roger Corman versions AND it actually looked like the comic without looking cartoonish!
The Fantasticar was awesome, Norin Radd, the Silver Surfer was wicked cool to watch and the story showing this now advanced and accepted Fantastic Team was really fun to watch. Also the BEST Stan Lee cameo yet! It had laughs, it had action, it had its serious parts.
If you didn't see the first one or hate Superhero movies...why the hell are you throwing off the voting? I HIGHLY recommend this flick. I actually left the theater feeling good. The kinda "I wanna see it again cause it was fun" good. Unlike the "I wanna see it again cause I'm confused and feeling unsatisfied" like Spiderman 3.
GO SEE IT! So like the NY Daily News, I give it 3 STARS

If the happy medium between crap and not crap is watery fart, then F4RotSS is a watery fart.
Actually... check that out F4RotSS... Take out the o and the movie actually speaks for itself!
I need not have come in here

some random thoughts:
- Honestly, I think I want an older Reed Richards and Sue Storm.
- Ben had absolutely nothing to do in this movie.
- Enough bandwidth has been wasted about Galactus (and I knew what I was getting when I sat down for the film), but yeah, I was a little disappointed.
- The climax was anti-climactic. For a movie so long on boring exposition, it was awfully short when it came to defeating Galactus.
- There is a fine line between good-natured hijinks between real flesh and blood characters versus cornball cheese. They stepped over that line with gigantic clown feet.
- I didn't think the Silver Surfer looked good at all. Terminator 2 was more convincing.
- Victor von Nip/Tuck is awful. It's like he's doing an impersonation of Jeff Goldblum's guest appearance on Will and Grace as von Doom.
- The whole wedding thing never paid off for the characters. Sue was never having real doubts. "woe is me; guess i'll just dye my hair some more"
- It's not a terrible movie by any means, but I kept looking at the time and just wanted to get through it already.

Jessica Alba look unbelievable 'done' though.
Don't think we'll see anything more from the franchise unless they do a grittier reboot.

Liked the first one better, but enjoyed this one, too.
These movies are needlessly derided. Not everything needs to be "relentlessly dark" to be cool.
