Clash of the Titans remake: crap or not crap

I'm a Harryhausen fan, so it was hard to swallow a remake. I tried to treat it as its own thing with nothing in common with the original. I couldn't believe when it was over. That's it? It's over already? That's the epic quest? Random points follow.

I laughed when he gave the speech to the remaining soldiers right before going into Medusa's lair. I get that they're trying to humanize the redshirts, but c'mon, we all know their fate.

The action scenes were fine but forgettable.

The design of Charon's boat was radical and interesting. I still prefer the smaller boat that is usually depicted in films and illustrations, but this one with the bone construction was cool.

I guess the Hades black fart effect was cool.

The whole "I'll do this as a human not as a god" thing. Yeah, I mean, okay, I see what they were doing, but it's a strange thing to do in this kinda movie. I mean, that's not at all what Greek myths are about (granted the original took its own liberties).

Lastly, it's soulless. I grew up on cheesy effects. I have more patience for cheesy effects than I do adequate yet boring cgi. Sure, part of it is nostalgia. But part of it is just engaging your own imagination with the less-than-perfect image in front of you. That's one of the reasons books are still cool: you can cook up your own images in your head. They engage you as a viewer. I never felt engaged with the remake. It was all too neat and pat: here comes the giant scorpion set piece, here comes the Medusa's lair set piece. A generation or two grew up watching Clash of the Titan reruns and a fair chunk of them remember it fondly. There's too much media noise for the remake to find any purchase. It's just okay. I don't regret watching it; I enjoyed it, but I won't watch it again.

Crap for being forgettable and pointless.

I had a couple of hits from the bong before I watched this and I thought it was awesome.

I might have to watch it again. Straight... but I'll probably still vote not crap because they gave the lead to an Aussie!!!
