I dump a lot of stuff on an external drive via 1394. I "safely remove" it before I shut down the computer. Every so often (maybe a quarter of the time) I can't stop it. I get this error (well, not so much an error, but a note).
The device ‘Generic Volume’ cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later.
I searched around but haven't found any solution that's worked for me. Anyone else?

What OS are you using?
I would think that if you're positive that there's no data being transferred between it and the computer, it would be perfectly safe to just shut it down. At least, that's what I've always done with my USB drives when they've had similar messages, and nothing bad has happened.

At least you can get your hard drive to work some of the time.
We just bought a new 1TB drive and there's no drivers for it!
It's a very expensive paperweight, at the moment.

I've had that problem but if I know no data is being transferred then I just remove it and I have had no problems with it yet
