It's new, rolling out in stages to all gmail accounts.
Basically, it adds status updates and similar Facebook functionality to Gmail. Because you can never have enough Facebook.
Actually, I hope this discourages people from signing in to Facebook so they can stop bugging me to login and update my crap. Then I can "ignore/block" them on Gmail once they start sending lolcatz in their Buzz updates.

The fact that every single spam account that signs up for my forum is a gmail account. Even with the recaptcha along with every other possible defense against that crap that SMF offers they still got through in swarms. I eventually just set it so that you can't sign up with a gmail account. The spam stopped instantly. Fuck gmail.

That may be, but the quest for popularity and growth with my wittle forum ended some time ago. Now it's just a place for me and my friends to go be jackasses and talk to each other. So gmail can fuck itself with an iron rod.
