By now you've probably seen the other articles about how the New York Times suppressed news stories related to the kidnapping of their reporter, David Rohde, by the Taliban.
It's an interesting story. On the one hand, it's understandable that they did it to increase the reporter's chance of survival. On the other hand, are they invoking this kind of maxim: "We have the responsibility to report newsworthy information except when suppressing such information may save lives"? How does this maxim fare when issues of national security pop up? Under what circumstances are media outlets permitted to keep us in the dark?
