I got a 3G iPhone the Friday before our trip to NYC, 3 weeks ago. The GPS capabilities really came in handy when trying to find places w/o getting lost.

So yesterday morning I went to set it on my desk before going to make a bowl of cereal, and I apparently didn't have it fully on the desk, because it fell off. When it hit the concrete floor, the hardcase I have for it popped off. I've dropped it once before, and Cynthia has dropped hers multiple times in the year she's had it with no ill effects. Well, not this time. The screen was white. I could see no physical damage to the phone. When I tried to power it off, it wouldn't. I tried the reset function to no avail. When I plugged it into the MacBook to attempt a sync, it came up in iTunes just fine. The touch screen worked, I just couldn't see what I was doing.

I swapped the SIM chip with my old phone and called my wife to let her know we had to go to the Apple Store that evening. She suggested the things I'd already done. I told her to call me back in a couple minutes, that I was going to swap the chip back and wanted to see if I could receive calls. I was able to receive calls, but I had to guess where to swipe my finger to answer. That got me to thinking. I know the layout of my main home screen. I also have a 1-touch dialing button on it to call her. I was able to enter my passcode & call her with the 1-touch dialer. So the phone worked, the touch screen worked, it was just the LCD part that was borked.

When we got to the Apple Store, the guys at the Genius Bar were very helpful. They said they'd seen phones do that before, that it's not a big deal, they'd simply give me a new phone. I did not tell them that I'd dropped it. Their theory is that something came loose due to it being sat on or something. They didn't seem to care how or why it was broken, they just wanted me to be happy.

So I'm now on my 2nd iPhone in just under 3 weeks. I'm getting more and more like Mango every day. biggrin.gif

3rd iMac.

3rd iPhone. Thank you very much.

Instead of buying a new mac gadget tonight, I bought their stock instead.

So when Microsoft makes something that has a track record of breaking (the XBox 360, the red ring of shit I believe you called it) it's bad and you hate it, but when multiple products you've purchased from Apple break several times a piece, you buy their stock?

Thing is, Apple is very good about making the customer happy. When my wife's iPhone screen went black & the touch screen stopped working for no reason, they swapped it out for a new (first gen) one, no questions asked. Same with my 2nd gen iPhone. Other than the broken screen on mango's iPhone (which is explicitly not covered), I'd be willing to bet they got him his 3rd iPhone very quickly & painlessly (if it was a warranty issue, and not just mango wanting the newest iToy). Apple also recalled the USB power adapter for the 3G iPhones. The recall happened before I purchased my phone. I thought I'd check their website to see if mine was good or bad. It was bad, so they sent me a new one. I had it next day.

When MS recalled the power cords on the first gen xBox, I entered in my serial number in their website, and was informed that it wasn't valid.

And for the record, I use a Microsoft keyboard & mouse with my MacBook. They do make good products, just like Apple has made some crap products.

I know several people who have had red ring issues with the 360. None of them paid a dime, some of them just got brand new 360s. Longest wait I've personally heard of is about 2 weeks.

Also MS spent tons of money to fix all the defective 360s once they found out they fucked up, without charging the people who bought it. I'm not saying MS is better than Apple or anything like that. I was just questioning mango's hatred of the 360 for the RRoD, since he's on his 3rd iPhone and iMac.

Keep in mind that mango may have simply upgraded from one iMac to a second iMac, then a third iMac. And he may have upgraded to the 3G iPhone when it came out. If that's the case, he's only had one iPhone go bad.

I'm also not choosing sides in the PC/MS vs Apple war. I use both, and don't really care one way or the other. From what I've read, Windows 7 is supposed to kick major ass.

Yeah I was reaching with my point, I was going back to the PS3 vs 360 thing. He's a PS3 fanboy, and I'm a 360 fanboy. Arguing about video games on the internet, double fail.

Heh, my game console is a 1st gen xBox. I only play Burnout on it. It kicks ass with a 40" HDTV.

Whenever I've played Halo 3 in HD it's been a lot harder. The reaction time is noticeably faster and it takes some getting used to. Friend of mine I play with is semi-pro at Halo 3, he just got an LCD TV and is playing horribly on it. I poop all over him when we play now, it's great.

See, I found that I got better scores with the HDTV than on my old 32" CRT. The details were sharper, & the reaction time was almost instantaneous, just like real life. When obstacles or targets came up, I could see them earlier & respond accordingly.

That was my problem, I was so used to the slight lag that the almost zero response time was screwing me up.

Reason I got a 360, PS3 wasn't out yet.

I was a PS2 guy. I got used to the controller.

The xbox controller is a bit bigger, and on madden, unless you map the buttons they are rotated 90 degrees from what I'm used to.

The red ring of death, and subsequent second red ring of death after repair in addition to hating the controller were enough to make me switch, the blue ray player and sleek piano black housing were just icing on the cake.

I miss playing Dead Rising, but that's it.

For what it's worth, I hate my wii at least 238 more times than I ever hated the xbox.

Also, one of the iPhones was for my wife, the other one was a 3G after the dropping thing.

The second iMac was an upgrade from the lemon they sold me, the third was when I decided my room was big enough for the large screen one.

I must have at least 5 iPods floating around, and I really hate the new nano.

The apple TV and time machine haven't broken, yet.

My cousin has a Wii, and I've only played it a few times. Outside of downloading some of the old Nintendo games they've emulated for it (I think I worded that right) I can't see a single reason to buy one of those things.

That made me laugh out loud.

I originally had a PS2 before an XBox. And I was happy with it. Then one day my roommate brought home an XBox with this 'Halo' game. The only FPS I'd played before that was Goldeneye on the N64. I played it, I loved it. He moved out shortly after Halo 2 came out. By that time I had already bought a couple games for the XBox despite not even owning one. I was going to keep the PS2 and buy an XBox and have both systems. Then I realized that every single game for the PS2 I had (at the time anyway) I could buy for the XBox. But I couldn't play Halo on the PS2 so that was the deal breaker.
